What Are Crazy Hats?

A party based on funny hats is a mini costume party without all the trouble of finding and buying a full costume.
Some people are intimidated by the “costume” thing but they’ll wear a funny hat. Remember they only wear it long enough to “Get the Party Started”.

A hat could be a funny hat simply because it is out of character for the person wearing it:

Kid in a Crazy Hat

  • A child wearing their father’s or mother’s hat
  • An adult wearing a child’s hat
  • An executive wearing a regular pointed party hat
  • A woman wearing a man’s hat.
  • A man wearing a woman’s hat.

A hat could be a funny hat simply because it’s so out of style like a :

Top Hat

  • A Top Hat
  • A Derby
  • An executive wearing a regular pointed party hat
  • A woman wearing a man’s hat
  • A man wearing a woman’s hat

Seasonal hats are often funny and fit both the crazy hat theme and/or a seasonal theme like a:

Santa Hat

  • A Christmas Hat
  • An Irish Hat
  • 4th of July Hat

Of course there are crazy hats that are actually made for the purpose of being extremely funny hats all on there own

Jester Hat

  • A joker’s hat with bells
  • A baseball cap with pony tails attached to the back
  • A hard hat with beer cans attached to the sides
  • A sun visor with spiked hair
  • Food themed hat like a cheese head, hot dog hat or a cheese steak hat
  • Animal hats
  • Umbrella hats
  • Baseball hats with funny sayings

Where to Get Your Crazy Hats

Hat Rack

The internet is a great place to search for you crazy hat party gear.

However, some of the funniest hats can be found at your local Thrift Shops.

Many Thrift Shops will have old hats which can be eccentric and funny at the same time.

By the way, Thrift Shops are a great place to save money.

So find your crazy hat then don’t forget to look around. There are usually some great finds in all the corners of the shop.

Annual Event

A crazy hat party theme can be an addition to any to occasion. It’s a great way to make every party a fun party.

A Crazy Hat Party could be an annual event and making it something special to look forward to every year.

It would be like that special Halloween Party or Christmas Party that you throw annually.

You’re usual guests would have all year to keep their eye out for their special funny hats. It would be a sought after honor to win one of the prizes for the contest.

Fund Raiser Party Theme

A Crazy Hat Party is a great theme for a fund raiser.

A Fund Raisers is always for a good cause but sometimes attending becomes a chore. Adding the Crazy Hat Theme makes it a fun party and something everyone will look forward to.

Attendance at your fundraiser would be increased due to the “BUZZ” as the party grew closer.

Are you looking for a constant source of cash for your non-profit organization like an Athletic Association or Volunteer Fire Company? Make a Crazy Hat Fund Raiser a quarterly event. Everyone looks forward to it so the turnout is dependable making this fund raiser an income source you can count on.

A Contest is in Order

A contest should be part of every funny hat party to add to the excitement.

The contest categories should include:

  • The Funniest
  • The Biggest
  • The Smallest
  • Most Creative
  • Most Boring (The Booby Prize)

You should mention the contest in your invitation. It gives everyone incentive to search a little harder for that special hat.

Don’t make a fuss over the prizes; it’s the winning that counts. Prizes are a good idea just to make the contest official. A tee shirt, a button or a hat with a funny saying on it will serve the purpose.

Crazy Hat Games

Crazy Hat Washer Toss

Play the game using the regular " Washer Toss Game Rules ".

Instead of a box with a cup, simply toss the washers into hat. Simple plastic Top Hats screwed or hot glued to a board to hold it down will do.

I suggest playing up to a score of 11 instead of 21 so the play moves quickly.

You can be sure it will become competitive as the party rolls on. It will end up like beer pong with hats.

Musical Hats

Play the game played using " Musical Chairs Game Rules ".

The game starts with any number of players and a number of hats; one fewer hat than the number of players.

The players stand in a circle facing inward. One of your guests will turn the music on and off during the playing of the game.

When the music is playing the players will pass the hats clockwise (to the person on their left). When the music stops the player who is left without a hat is eliminated from the game.

One hat is also removed so there is always one less hat then there are players.

The music begins again and the passing of the hats repeats until only one player left in the game.

The person in possession of the last hat, when the music stops, is the winner of the game.

Crazy Hat Invitations

“Crazy Hat” invitations are a great way to start the fun long before the party starts.

You can make your invitations in the shape of Top Hats, St Patrick ‘s Day Hats, Cowboy Hats, etc… “Scrapbooking” supplies are a quick and easy way to decorate your party invitations without having to cut each individual piece yet achieve a unique design for your invitations. Scrapbook supplies can be purchase on-line or at your local craft stores.

Use images of crazy hats when making your invitations. This will give your guests examples of what types of hats could be worn to the party.

Don’t forget ALL of the important details, date, time, location, RSVP Number, Email Address.

Mention the contest. Knowing the hats will be judged tends to bring out the competitiveness in everyone and the hats get funnier and wilder.

Providing the FACEBOOK and Twitter information will start the BUZZ about the crazy hat party. It will grow into a Twitter and Facebook frenzy as the party gets closer and everyone wants to know who’s wearing what and where they’re getting their crazy hats.

Send your invitations out well in advance so your guests have plenty of time to search for the perfect Crazy Hat. Always request an RSVP at least two weeks prior to the party to make your party planning easier.

Crazy Hat Food and Drinks

The food and drinks you serve at your crazy hat party should be easy to prepare and simple to serve.

For the guests who lean toward the pirate theme and wear a Pirate’s Hat and an eye patch a nice Spiced Rum Punch would satisfy even the toughest of scallywags.

And it wouldn’t be right to have a party theme based on hats without having a Mad-HAT-tan.

And while everyone is showing off their outlandish hats wouldn’t it only be proper for them to be munching on Stuffed Mushroom "Caps".

Crazy Hat Decorating

Crazy Hats, Funny Hats,
Hats of every fair.
Laying on the tables,
Hanging from the chandelier.
Little hats, Big hats,
Hats your guests will wear.
White hats, Colored hats,
Crazy Hats are everywhere.

Various styles, shapes and sizes of funny hats placed about the party area are always great decorations for a crazy hat party.

If your crazy hat party is a celebration of a special occasion then the hats you choose for your décor should reflect the theme of the occasion. Like a birthday hat for a birthday party or green hats for a St. Patrick’s Day Party.

You can make crazy hats to use as décor or cut shapes of crazy hats and hang them from your party streamers.

Obtain a white tablecloth and glue some pictures of funny hats onto it. Again, "scrapbooking" supplies are a great way to save time.

Inexpensive party hats of all shapes and sizes can easily be purchased on-line along with your regular party supplies. You can also find many styles of hats at your local party store or dollar store.

Search for authentic funny hats from your local "thrift store". They're always unique and interesting conversation pieces.

Party Poopers

Every party has a “pooper” so don’t forget to have a supply of party hats or baseball hats with funny sayings on them for the “party poopers”.

Everyone should wear a hat so they can be part of the fun but don’t be too insistent or you’ll ruin the mood. The hats you supply are more to make the people who haven't worn a crazy hat feel more comfortable.

So send out the invites and let the search for the best Crazy Hat begin.
